Remembering her mother’s account of an event during World War II, Mary Belle Early Howell shared a precious piece of family history, “Although my mother’s previous children had been born at home, I was born in May 1942 at the Ephraim McDowell Hospital in Danville in Boyle County, Kentucky.  While we were in the hospital, my mother’s brother, Rollin Montgomery Feese, Jr. arrived for a visit.  He had enlisted in the United States Army earlier in the year and was expecting to be sent to the Pacific Theatre.  After my uncle said his farewell and left the room, my mother could hear the sound of his footsteps on the floor, as he walked away.  At that moment, she knew that she would never see her brother again.  Years passed.  Quite often my mother and I would walk up to the World War II Memorial in Somerset.  She taught me how to recognize her brother’s name, to reach out and touch the letters and to always remember our last visit with him.”
