     Before and during the American Revolutionary War, Kentucky was a territory of the state of Virginia.  On 1 June 1792 Kentucky was admitted to the Union, officially becoming the fifteenth state and a commonwealth.  Twenty-nine years later, Perry County was formed from parts of Clay County and Floyd County in 1821.

BRASHEAR, SAMUEL (1763-1829), VIRGINIA MILITIA, THE BATTLE OF LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN AND                           THE BATTLE OF CHICKAMAUGA CREEK, AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR AND INDIAN HOSTILITIES.
HOMETOWN:  Perry County, Kentucky, United States of America.
OTHER RESIDENCE:  North Carolina.  Tennessee.
DATE OF BIRTH:  6 August 1763, Guilford County, Colony of North Carolina.
PARENTS:  Phoebe Nicks and Robert Samuel Brashear.
SPOUSE:  Margaret Eakin.
CHILDREN:  Margaret, Sampson, Robert S., Isaac, James N., Phoebe, John Ezekiel.                                                ENLISTMENT AND DISCHARGE DATES:  1780 - 1782.  

RANK:  Captain.  Lieutenant.  
COMBAT ORGANIZATION:  Served with Captain Thomas Vincents and Colonel Sevier, Washington County, Regiment.          ~ In 1780 he was a Lieutenant under Captain John Sawyer.                                                                                                               ~ In 1782 he was a Lieutenant under Captain Thomas Vincens.  
  
BATTLES, CAMPAIGNES:  American Revolutionary War and later campaigns.  In 1788, The Battle of Lookout Mountain.  Battle of Chickamauga Creek waters of Tennessee River.  From a Perry County, Kentucky deposition by Samuel’s son, Sampson Brashear, on behalf of his mother:  “...my father had been a soldier...that from the age of sixteen years he had been a standing soldier and officer to guard the frontiers, and so acted until the close of the old war with Great Britain, and until the Indian hostilities had ceased.”  Source:  The Brashear Story A Family History.
PENSION:  His widow was granted a military pension.
DATE OF DEATH:  25 December 1829 in Sullivan County, Tennessee.

COMBS, JOHN “SOLDIER” JR. (1761-1848), BATTLE OF BRANDYWINE CREEK, BATTLE OF GERMANTOWN, VALLEY FORGE, AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR.
HOMETOWN:  Perry County, Kentucky.
DATE OF BIRTH:  7 February 1761 in Shenandoah, Warren County, Virginia.
PARENTS:  Nancy Harding and John “Father of the Eight Brothers” Combs, Sr., who settled on White Oak on Carr’s Fork in Perry County, Kentucky and may have served in the American Revolutionary War. 
SPOUSE:  Biddy Nance Combs.  Margaret.
ENTERED SERVICE FROM:  Virginia.
ENLISTMENT DATE:  1 January 1977 in Virginia.
SEPTEMBER 1777:  Battle of Brandywine Creek.
OCTOBER 1777:  Battle of Germantown.
VALLEY FORGE WINTER ENCAMPMENT:  6 January 1778 – 6 June 1778, Valley Forge, Chester, Pennsylvania, under the command of General George Washington.
WOUNDED:  In the Neck and Leg.

RANK: Private
COMBAT ORGANIZATION:  4th Virginia Regiment (under Captain Michael Bowyer) and 8th Virginia Regiment.  Served in Captain Jonathan Langdon and Benjamin Casey’s Company of Colonel James Wood’s Twelfth Virginia Regiment.  Under General George Washington’s command; Battle of Brandywine Creek in September 1777, Battle of Germantown, winter quarters at Valley Forge in 1777.  When he was inaccurately listed as a deserter, he was in a military hospital close to Valley Forge.  When released, he returned to the Valley Forge Camp on June 1778 and received no punishment.  Honorably Discharged from General Charles Scott’s Army in Brunswick, New Jersey about May 1779.  Source:  The Combses Genealogy.
Pension Number:  S 35 851, Virginia, May 13, 1825 made an application for pension in Hazard, Perry County, Kentucky.  BATTLES, CAMPAIGNS:  Battle of Brandywine Creek.  Battle of Germantown.                                                                          13 MAY 1825, APPLICATION FOR PENSION:  Hazard, Perry County, Kentucky.
DATE OF DEATH:  27 April 1848.

STATUS:  Survived The War.
DISPOSITION:  Buried.
BURIAL:  Near Meadow Branch, On the old Matt Crawford place, next to Sam Combs place, Perry County, Kentucky.
