LITTLETON, GEORGE JAMES (1917-1996), BOMBARDIER, WOUNDED, CRASH-LANDING, PRISONER OF WAR, STALAG PRISON CAMP, ARMY AIR FORCE, WORLD WAR II.

ON BOMBARDIER, GEORGE J. LITTLETON’S NINETEENTH COMBAT MISSION OVER GERMANY, 15 ME-190S ATTACKED THE PLANE.  UNDER ORDERS, EIGHT CREWMEN BAILED OUT OF THE BURNING SHIP.  WHILE PREPARING TO BE THE LAST MAN TO JUMP, FIRST LIEUTENANT, HENRY V. MARKOW, PILOT, DISCOVERED THAT SECOND LIEUTENANT LITTLETON WAS WOUNDED AND WITHOUT A PARACHUTE.  MARKOW ABORTED HIS EXIT PLAN.  AFTER HE CRASH-LANDED THE DISINTEGRATING PLANE, HE PULLED LITTLETON OUT OF THE RUBBLE.  BOTH WERE CAPTURED AND BECAME PRISONERS OF WAR IN A GERMAN STALAG IN WORLD WAR II.  Source:  Website, 384thbombgroup.com.

NINETEENTH AND LAST MISSION:  22 February 1944, Combat Mission, U. S. B-17-G Aircraft was attacked by 15 Md-109s near Munster, Germany.  The plane caught fire, a rudder and nose were gone, elevator control was damaged, an engine and oxygen were knocked out, most guns were out of service and men were wounded.  The order was given to bail out.  Checking to make sure that all other crew members had left the plane, First Lieutenant Henry V. Markow, Pilot, discovered that Second Lieutenant, George J. INTERVIEW OF JUNIOR HASKEL LITTLETON BY HIS SISTER, EUNICE FAYDANE “FAYE” LITTLETON POPE BURNET IN APRIL 2003:  “I was drafted in the U. S. Army Air Force on October 14, 1941 at Olive Hill, Kentucky.  I left Olive Hill on October 15, 1941, and I arrived in Huntington, West Virginia.  I stayed overnight in a hotel.  The next day I boarded Train No. 3 to Fort Thomas, Kentucky.  There I stayed and trained for about 4 weeks.”
    “Then I was shipped out to Seymour Johnson Field, North Carolina for about a month.  Then on to Maxwell Field, Montgomery, Alabama, where I stayed about 6 months.  Then I was shipped out to Nashville, Tennessee, where I stayed about 30 months.  Then I was scheduled to go overseas.  I left out from California on a boat named Miss Bellior.  There were about 3 boats loaded with soldiers, destination Casablanca, North Africa.  We were 22 days on the ocean.  It was long about the time of the invasion of North Africa.  There we hiked to Oran, North Africa, where we stayed about 1 week, living in tents.  Then I boarded another boat to Bangalara, India.  We were 22 more days on water.  I stayed in India about 22 months.”
     “In India I worked in an Army Air Force Supply Building, delivering parts and supplies to the Air Field.  I had 10 Indian Clerks, 10 Indian Labor Workers and 12 U. S. A. Army Soldiers.  My title was 835 Supply Clerk.  My rank was Sergeant at one time.  I have a Good Conduct Medal.”
     “When I had enough points to get out of the army, I began my return trip home.  I took a plane from Bangalara, India to Calcutta, India.  I was on the plane from 9 o’clock in the morning to 3 p.m. in the evening.  Then I got on a boat headed for New York.  From New York, I took a train to Fort Knox, Kentucky, where I was discharged on January 8, 1946.  Next I took a bus to Louisville, Kentucky, where I boarded Train 22 to Ashland, Kentucky.  I stayed overnight in Ashland.  The next day I took Train 27 to Fultz, Kentucky to my home.”
