THE HATFIELD AND McCOY FEUD

ASA HARMON “ACY” McCOY (1828-1865) ENLISTED IN THE UNION ARMY DURING THE CIVIL WAR.  HE WAS GIVEN A MILITARY FURLOUGH HOME.  ON THE RETURN TRIP BACK TO HIS REGIMENT, HE WAS TRACKED AND KILLED ON 7 JANUARY 1865.  HE WAS THE BROTHER OF RANDOLPH “RANDALL” McCOY (1825-1914), WHO WOULD HAVE FIVE OF HIS CHILDREN MURDERED DURING THE FEUD:  TOLBERT, PHARMER, RANDOLPH, JR., CALVIN AND ALIFAIR.

IN 1881, SARAH AND RANDOLPH McCOY’S DAUGHTER, ROSEANNA McCOY (1859-1889), HAD A DAUGHTER, BY JOHNSE HATFIELD, SON OF WILLIAM ANDERSON “DEVIL ANSE” HATFIELD (1837-1920) AND LEVISA CHAFIN.  JOHNSE MARRIED NANCY McCOY, DAUGHTER OF MARTHA CLINE AND ASA HARMON McCOY (1828-1865).  NANCY AND ROSEANNA WERE FIRST COUSINS.  ROSEANNA’S DAUGHTER DIED BEFORE REACHING HER FIRST BIRTHDAY.

 
IN AN ELECTION DAY FIGHT IN AUGUST 1882, ELLISON HATFIELD (1842-1882), BROTHER OF WILLIAM ANDERSON “DEVIL ANSE” HATFIELD, DIED AFTER ENGAGING IN A FIGHT WITH  ONE OR MORE OF RANDOLPH MCCOY'S SONS.                                                                                              

ON AUGUST 9, 1882, RANDOLPH McCOY’S SONS, TOLBERT, PHARMER AND RANDOLPH, JR. WERE TIED TO PAWPAW BUSHES AND MURDERED BY GUNSHOTS. 

ON JANUARY 1, 1888, THE McCOY HOMEPLACE WAS BURNED TO THE GROUND.  CALVIN AND ALIFAIR WERE SHOT, WHEN THEY RAN OUTSIDE TO ESCAPE THE FLAMES.  SARAH WAS BEATEN ON THE ICE COLD GROUND AND LEFT TO DIE.  SHE WAS UNABLE TO MOVE, TRAPPED BY HER BLOODY HAIR AND HEAD, WHICH HAD FROZEN SOLID AGAINST THE EARTH.  RANDOLPH AND SARAH SURVIVED THE ATTACK.

The red, white and blue quilt honored Hatfield and McCoy Civil War Soldiers and World War II Soldiers.  The quiltmakers were America Hatfield McCoy and Rhoda Hall McCoy, who were sister-in-laws, living in Pike County, Kentucky during World War II.  America Hatfield married Frank McCoy, and Rhoda Hall married Asa Harmon “Bud” McCoy, Sr.  Frank and Asa were the sons of Mary Elizabeth Coleman and Larkin H. McCoy.

~ Willie Hatfield, currently, his parents and military service are uncertain, because there were many others with the same name and few available documents.  The name on the quilt might belong to Willie Hatfield, son of James Landon Hatfield and Anna McCoy, who was the daughter of Louisa Visa Stafford and Elliott Alexander “Doc” McCoy.

Hatfield (World War II Soldier) and Woodrow McCoy (World War II Soldier). Two smaller stars were placed in honor of Asa McCoy and Willie Hatfield.

~ After the Victory in Europe, 7 May 1945, Jack remained in the European Theatre.  He assisted in building bridges and a camp for displaced refugees, who were returning to Germany.  German Prisoners of War were used as a labor force.  The battalion was in charge of guarding and caring for them.
SHIPPING OUT, 3 JULY 1944, U. S. A.:  From Camp Bowie, Texas, Jack took a troop train to Camp Myles Standish, Massachusetts.  After boarding a troop ship, he began the journey east across the Atlantic Ocean.                                                                   
LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND, 14 JULY 1944:  Jack Disembarked.
UTAH BEACH, FRANCE, CIRCA 1 AUGUST 1944:  Jack was transported to France on a LST.  He first set foot on French soil on Utah Beach.
PARIS, FRANCE, DAY OF LIBERATION, 25 AUGUST 1944:  Jack was in Paris on the historic day.

DECEMBER 7, 1941:  MILLER SURVIVED THE JAPANESE ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR.  His ship, the USS SAN FRANCISCO was in overhaul:  Engines broken down, ammunition removed for storage, guns removed, “met the Japanese attack with two .30 machine guns and what rifles could be broken out of small arms lockers ... [the ship] survived the attack on Pearl Harbor without damage and was immediately ordered out to sea.”  Note:  A week later the ship was able to leave Pearl Harbor.
